ABC Rebel is a dramatic comedy “inspired by” the true warrior of social justice Erin Brockovich. The series finale aired on June 10 in two episodes, “Trial Day” and “36 Hours”.
The series follows a class action lawsuit against a medical equipment company that manufactures and sells an artificial valve used in heart patients. Several patients have died or became ill after receiving this device due to poisoning from the coating used in the manufacturing process. Each episode builds on the previous one, since the beginning of the filing of the complaint and it ends with the trial.
Annie Flynn Ray Bello aka “Rebel” (Katey Sagal) is drawn into the affair by Helen Peterson (Mary McDonnell) and her pregnant daughter, who both have the valve. Helen is dying and her daughter’s baby dies shortly after birth. The other people in the class action are just as tragic. The problem is, most patients don’t die from the device, their lives are saved. This makes excessive the demand for the class action to have the device taken off the market.
As the court date approaches, medical equipment company Stonemore, run by CEO Mark Duncan (Adam Arkin), employs a female fixer who arranges the disappearance of witnesses. The idea is to paint Stonemore with the widest brush, with the implication that Big Pharma is evil. The scientist who created the coating for the device ultimately had a nervous breakdown due to the guilt of the deaths and the fixative drugs and kidnapped him on the day of the trial.
Rebel’s boss is the lawyer she gets to represent the people in the class action lawsuit, Julian Cruz (Andy Garcia), whose wife died after receiving the valve. One of Rebel’s two ex-husbands is the lawyer representing Stonemore and their daughter works for him. The characters on all sides are all intertwined and properly inclusive – Rebel’s sidekick, her second husband, and their daughter are all black, she has an adopted Latina daughter, and Cruz has a trans son.
In the grand finale, Rebel discovers a USB stick with all the information needed to doom Stonemore. The scientist took many notes after realizing the dangers of going to trial as a witness. It is discovered that Stonemore performed tests on healthy prisoners who were implanted with the artificial valve in a private prison that Duncan is a part of, thus increasing the level of evil and profit.
Cruz: Your Honor, one moment, please.
Judge Bobiak: Order! Order! Mr. Cruz! Mr. Cruz!
Cruz: One second, Your Honor. Ah. Yes. Thank you very much for coming. Sorry, Your Honor. I have new information. Your Honor, this is my client attorney, Ms. Annie Flynn Ray Bello, and next to her is the Assistant United States Attorney, and they have proof that Stonemore Medical has tested its valves on healthy prisoners in a hospital. private prison in violation of all ethics and many state and federal laws, and in light of that, I would like to give Mr. Ray one last chance to settle down. And you’re right. I’m not bluffing.
Duncan: Look, Karsten Vokelberg is maniac on his best days and deranged on his worst days. He was obsessed with the idea that the valve was causing damage, but he had no hard evidence. If he has conducted some kind of illegal trial, it is against him.
Rebel: Yeah, he knew you were gonna say that.
Rebel: He also knew that you would destroy any record of any conversation you had with him, so he kept many files. E-mails, voicemails, communication with you or anyone in your company. He kept everything.
Duncan: I approved a limited trial to reassure him, okay? I was told that this would only involve prisoners who could potentially benefit from the valve and only on a voluntary basis.
Cruz: Always altruistic.
Rebel: Dozens of heart-healthy prisoners had the Stonemore valve implanted in exchange for a recommendation for early release. You are a member of the board of directors of this private prison, Mark. It doesn’t look good to you.
Cruz: $ 600 million plus you pay to have each complainant have their heart valve removed and all of their follow-up medical care in perpetuity. Plus, you’re taking that God-forsaken torture device that you call a heart valve off the market for good. $ 600 million.
Ray: I need a moment to chat with my client.
Cruz: Give whatever you want, but every minute you take, my number increases, because the alternative is that we are going to go back to this courtroom, I am going to put Annie at the bar, and I’ll let the jury hear what murderous bastard your client is. You have no more movements, my friend. $ 600 million.
Rebel: You’re going to jail, Mark, for a very long time.
This fortuitous discovery forces Stonemore to settle the case and end the trial. The company accepts a $ 600 million settlement, plus medical treatment, and Rebel wins another victory over the greedy big business that profits from the poisoning of people.
But Rebel lost to greedy big business (ABC) profiting from poisoning people’s brains – the show was canceled.
