The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was eventful and full of dramatic action in many vital stages. However, the end result of the race saw F1 driver Sergio Perez (RedBull) claim the victory. Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) managed to take second place and Peirre Gasly took third place.
Despite the final result of this Grand Prix, the ranking of the first points of the race was very different. No one expected the outcome after all the drama during the race. The emotions were mixed because some drivers were happy and for some it was a big disappointing stage of their season.
Hamilton and Verstappen fail with DNF
Max Verstappen was comfortably leading the race and it seemed to be his. He led by a few seconds in front of his teammate Perez and Hamilton who was then third. Suddenly, with only five laps remaining, he suffered an unfortunate failure involving his tires which derailed the car. This unfortunately forced him to abandon this race and therefore not to accumulate points to contribute to the classification of the drivers’ season championship.
Verstappen was furious when he got out of his vehicle and then kicked his tire. It was a devastating moment as he could have extended his lead. If the positions remained the same, Verstappen would have a fourteen point gap rather than a four point gap. Max certainly didn’t hold back from what he was feeling.
“Frustrating and very disappointing so close to retirement with a flat tire. “ says Verstappen. “It’s a great shame. Sometimes you can hate the sport – for a few hours and then everything will be fine again. Lyrics of Max Verstappen. “Honestly, it was a great day up until then – the car was on fire, I was just doing what I had to do behind me, I was pretty comfortably in the lead. It would have been, say, an easy victory. But, of course, there are no guarantees in sports.
A few minutes after the intervention of the safety car, the race was suspended under a red flag. There was some question as to whether the race should continue via a restart or be suspended. If the race had been suspended, it would indeed have favored Max Verstappen. The results would have been finalized in the previous round before the security bubble. However, the race was reset via a restart with just two laps to go.
Just when things seemed to be going wrong for Verstappen, it was like bad luck was shifting to Hamilton. You wouldn’t believe that with just two laps to go, Hamilton was unable to finish. His brakes were smoking on the grid when the race was restarted, but Hamilton overdid it and his car came straight off the track on the first corner.
Perez looked to have the lead in the first corner, but Hamilton wanted a win. So he tried to move and instead of turning his car deviated from its course because it was too fast for its already partially damaged brakes to engage. Second place would have been a win for Hamilton today due to Verstappen’s retirement.
Everything changed and Lewis could not accumulate points either. As a result, his mistake made up for Verstappen who currently has a four-point advantage over Hamilton in the seasonal championship standings.
Lewis was deeply disappointed, but admitted he wanted to stake everything on his Instagram. It was a learning lesson for him.
“Today has been an enriching experience. We worked so hard to get back into the top 10 today after a tough week here in Baku. We gave everything today and a small error caused the brakes to be deactivated. Sorry for the men and women of our team, we will come back stronger for the next race »
Vettel & Gasly celebrate a turning point in the season
gaseous spoke about his engine problems and the fact that he had to take a risk. “It was very difficult for me from the halfway point with an engine problem,” he said. “We were losing a lot of power on the straights and Seb managed to pass us in the middle of the race.
“Every time I braked, I didn’t know if I was going to stop the car, but I had to go, I really wanted this podium. “I took big risks, but it was clearly worth it. “
Vettel was satisfied with his result today after a difficult start to the season. “Obviously very happy for P2 and the team. I think it’s great for us; we had a very difficult start to the season and we expected a lot more after such a strong year as the team last year.
All in all, the Baku city circuit provided a lot of shocking moments with essential drivers. The majority of the riders felt the pressure and the tension of having to go through difficult times. This Grand Prix has been a difficult moment of the season for most, overtaking Hamilton and Verstappen.
Other drivers and teams who were not in a position to claim the championship have indeed felt the pressure. These are the results of the Grand Prix and the current seasonal ranking. The French Grand Prix is next from June 18e-20e.
