Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) will close its doors to walk-in patients from July as part of the facility’s decongestion, said Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director General Mohamed Badi.
The new development, he said, will allow the country’s largest hospital to focus only on referral cases.
The NMS boss said the move was part of a larger Health Ministry plan to have referral hospitals across the country serve what they were specifically created to do.
“In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, we were able to produce a policy document on the referral system in Kenya. Nairobi County will be used as a guinea pig as the first county to implement this strategy to ensure that KNH becomes a teaching and referral-only hospital, ”Gen. From Badi division.
Ahead of the deadline, he said the NMS was fighting against time to get 24 new level 2 and 3 hospitals fully operational.
Construction of the new 2 billion shillings hospitals, which began last August, aims to increase Nairobi’s bed capacity and reduce the need for patients to rush to KNH even with minor injuries.
Four new hospitals have been ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta and six more will be launched in the coming week.
“We are working hard to ensure that all hospitals in informal settlements and disadvantaged areas are completed by June 1 and operational by the end of June as the deadline for closing the KNH to walk-in patients is the next day. first week of July. ,” he said.
He further added that Mama Lucy Hospital will also be transformed into a Level 5 facility while the new Mathare-Korogocho Level 5 Hospital will be opened soon.
In addition, Mr Badi said that Mbagathi hospital will also be reorganized as part of the KNH decongestion strategy.
“The procurement and tendering process for the Mama Lucy Hospital expansion has already been completed and the contract will soon be awarded to a contractor for the construction of the extension. All of these new developments will drastically reduce the number of patients rushing to KNH, ”said the director of NMS.
