President Joe Biden’s administration is considering massive Section 230 reform to intimidate Big Tech and censor so-called disinformation from conservative sources online.
The Biden administration is “considering” whether to attempt to amend Sec. 230 to fight misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter ”, Protocol reported on July 20. Morning Joe host Mika brzezinski request a Biden official if the administration is “open to change [Section] 230 “So Big Tech companies that help disseminate“ false information ”could be“ held accountable, ”“ responsible for posting ”so-called misinformation, and“ open to legal action. ”Communications Director of the White House Kate bedingfield replied, “Well, we’re looking at that, and they should definitely be held accountable.” Bedingfield then pivoted and suggested that the real crisis facing the American republic is the existence of conservative media:
“It is also the responsibility of the people who create the content. And again, I would come back to, you know, there are conservative news outlets that create irresponsible content that shares misinformation about the, the virus that’s being shared on these platforms. So it’s a large and complicated ecosystem, and everyone has a responsibility to make sure that we don’t give people the wrong information about a vaccine that will save their lives. “
Biden has a habit of attacking free speech on social media platforms. He previously criticized Section 230 in an interview in January 2020.
Joe Biden, the leading Democratic frontrunner at the time, said The New York Times editorial board “that Section 230 should be revoked, immediately” for large tech companies. Time called the provision “fairly basic” for the Internet.
Biden then suggested that Section 230 was responsible for a host of problems:
“That’s right. Exactly right. And he should be revoked. He should be revoked because this is not just an internet company. It is spreading lies that they know to be false, and we should set standards. Similar to what the Europeans do when it comes to privacy. You still have editors. I’m sitting with them. No joke. There is no editorial impact on Facebook. Nothing. Not at all. It’s irresponsible. It is totally irresponsible.
