Amherst women’s basketball coach GP Gromacki recorded his 600th career win on Friday night as the Mammoths brought their winning streak to five with a 58-48 win over Connecticut College.

Gromacki earned his 600th win in fewer games, 686, than any coach in NCAA basketball history — regardless of division, men’s basketball or women’s basketball. He surpassed the record set by Hope women’s basketball coach Brian Morehouse, who needed 690 games to reach win No. 600.

Gromacki joined Amherst in 2007 after coaching at St. Lawrence for six seasons and notching 143 wins, before going 437-48 in his 17 seasons at the helm for the Mammoths. He has piloted the program to eight NESCAC championships, three national championships (2011, 2017, 2018), and perfect seasons in 2017 and 2018. He was the 2017 D3hoops.com national coach of the year, five-time D3hoops.com New England Coach of the Year and six-time NESCAC Coach of the Year.

Morehouse reached the 700-win mark on Jan. 13 of this year, in his 795th game. Gromacki can reach the 700 club faster than Morehouse if he goes 100-8 or better.
