Thrilling final at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. A tournament that seemed mortgaged after the first rounds by South Korean In Gee Chun, was reopened by an incredible collapse of the latter in the second and third rounds.
After also being at -11 at the halfway point, the South Korean dropped to -5 which was then enough for her to win her third Major in her career.
In Gee Chun, results
Two consecutive rounds of 75 strokes for her, for a total of six strokes lost in the last 18 holes.
A vertical collapse, perhaps even mental, which allowed the opponents to return. The Australian Minjee Lee and the American Lexi Thompson first approached, then paired, even passing her in the provisional standings. An unfortunate management of the last two holes by Thompson, Lee’s bogey at 17 and above all the providential birdie for Chun at the par 5 of the 16, have definitely brought the trophy to the 28-year-old’s bulletin board, in one of the most incredible finals of the season.
She closes at -3 and the Thai Atthaya Thitikul in fourth position. A lot of South Korea in the top 10 thanks to Hyo Joo Kim, Hye-jin Choi and Sei Young Kim who, together with the Japanese Nasa Hataoka and the Australian Hannah Green , finish in fifth position at -1, the last to be able to finish below par.
