During the 2021 National Women’s Soccer League season, Sarah Gorden was an integral part for the Chicago Red Stars. That offseason she was traded to Angel City FC, with high expectations for the LA-based team’s inaugural season.

Unfortunately, a torn ACL in preseason forced the defender to watch the 2022 NWSL season from the sidelines.

“Coming off the season where I played every single minute from the first game to the final and not being able to give that to my new team was incredibly disappointing,” Gorden said. “It was something that took me a few months into my injury to really come to terms with and to really figure out how to be supportive and still be a good teammate when I wasn’t at practice or in the games and taking on that new role was really difficult and it also gave me a lot of motivation to come back and be ready to do it.”

The Equalizer sat down with Sarah Gorden to talk about mental health, her journey back to the pitch and her current season with Angel City.
