Albertin Montoya smiles on the Bay FC bench

Over a year ago, Albertin Montoya was initially hired as a consultant for Bay FC as he was tasked with the role of helping the club find a permanent head coach. After four months of candidate interviews and providing staffing suggestions, Montoya received a call from the club with a surprising request: He was asked to coach the team.

“I just wasn’t prepared for it,” Montoya told The Equalizer. “So I actually took a couple of days, but ultimately I love coaching at every level.”

‘The rest is history’

Montoya’s résumé includes coaching jobs at a variety of levels with the Cyberrays in the Women’s United Soccer Association, FC Gold Pride in the Women’s Professional Soccer, the predecessor to the NWSL, and even the California Storm, which are now part of the USL Network.

At the college level, Montoya has also coached at both Stanford University and at Santa Clara University while simultaneously coaching teams at the youth level. For Montoya, his typical work day began at 3 am and ended at 10 pm with games to follow on the weekends.
