Last week Emily Fox officially left the North Carolina Courage for Arsenal, trading the National Women’s Soccer League for England’s Women’s Super League. There, she joins up with her former teammates at the University of North Carolina, Alessia Russo and Lotte Wubben-Moy. She also becomes the latest in a long line of American players to venture out into other leagues in other countries in a bid to learn something new.

Fox’s move came just a few weeks after the announcement that Kristie Mewis had signed with West Ham United, also in the WSL. These transfers are all the more significant given the international context, less than six months on from the United States women’s national team’s worst-ever performance at a World Cup and two months after Emma Hayes was confirmed as the national team’s next manager.
