Tigres Femenil and Club América Femenil have seen nonstop action for a week.

In Liga MX Femenil league play, both sides — who currently occupy the first and second place spots on the table, with América at the top with 24 points, while Tigres has 22 points — featured on Friday, Aug. 25. Both teams picked up victories, with América earning a road win over Mazatlán, 3-1, while Tigres hosted Atlas for a 2-0 victory.

For América, Andrea Pereira, Katty Martínez and Kiana Palacios found the back of the net, with Martínez and Palacios scoring within two minutes of each other. But it was Pereira’s goal that owns the highlight reel, taking a free kick outside the box and tucking it right under the crossbar.

Meanwhile, in league play, Tigres topped Atlas and earned a clean sheet. After a scoreless first half, Stephany Mayor opened up the scoring in the 49th minute. Mayor collected a pass from Lizbeth Ovalle and headed it up and over the goalkeeper.

In the 67th minute, Ovalle broke free down the left flank, collected the ball, dribbled it in the box and cut in front of goalkeeper Camila Vázquez. To make matters worse for Vázquez, Ovalle’s goal was a nut meg.

The table is tight up top and the battle for first place rests in the hands of Club América, who have a perfect 8-0-0 record. meanwhile, Tigres drew one match this season — against Chivas — and held a 7-1-0 record.

That wasn’t it for the two powerhouse teams, as they hosted international friendlies on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Held in México, Club América welcomed FC Barcelona Femení to the famous Estadio Azteca, while 10 hours away Tigres hosted Real Madrid Femenino at El Volcán.

Both teams fell against their European counterparts, but Tigres did get a point on the board, taking the lead, momentarily. Maricarmen Reyes, who played collegiate soccer at UCLA, took a volley and put it past French goalkeeper Mylène Chavas.

The lead was short-lived, however. Signe Bruun, a Danish international, equalized in the 39th minute, off a corner kick. After an initial punch from Tigres goalkeeper Aurora Santiago, Tigres couldn’t clear the ball and Bruun got her head on it. Three defenders stormed towards the goal line but could not clear the ball in time. Bruun earned a brace with a 56th minute goal with another header.

Maite Oroz, who has eight appearances with the senior Spanish national team, scored for Real Madrid in the 60th minute. Oroz scored off a strike inside the box, which she dribbled in with no contest. Real Madrid won, 3-1.

At the Azteca, Club América failed to get on the board. Barcelona picked up two goals, courtesy of Clàudia Pina and Judit Pujols, an 18-year-old defender.

All four teams, in their respective matches, held up signs in support of Jenni Hermoso, during her ongoing struggles and fight against the Spanish federation and president Luis Rubiales.
